Welcome back to Magic Monday! This week’s theme is wrapped in a Disney fairy tale….
Three days ago, I got the chance to perform at the lavish Core Club in NYC through the lovely Shien Lee. The New York Times calls the Core Club a “Portal to Power”….but we used it as a portal into speakeasy days gone by.
The clock struck 10pm, and I raced to my second gig of the night at Beau Marche. Once I got there, I realized that in a panic, I left the other one of these behind at the Core Club.
An hour later, Shien texted me that she found it, and I breathed a massive sigh of relief.
I got to be the Cinderella of Burlesque for one night.
And you know me, I always look for signs. So that’s why I’m bringing you some sizzling shoe magic today!
My Grandma loved to put lucky things in the soles of her shoes. Things that no one else could see, but that she could feel. Things that would bring her an extra bit of luck.
In 2006, when I started performing professionally, my first big gig was at Marc Jacobs’ holiday party. It was straight out of a fairy tale. At one point in the evening, cannons on a second floor balcony blew confetti glitter in the air, so that it slowly rained down on all the party guests waltzing below. I was in awe.
I didn’t realize nights like this actually existed! This was the world I had dreamed of living in back when I was growing up in Florida. I had only witnessed things like this in movies. And here I was in New York City, getting paid to perform, doing what I love, in a fantasy wonderland.
So that night, I scooped up some of the glitter from the floor. A physical reminder of the good times.
And I did what my Grandma would have done. I taped it to the inside of my shoe.
So that if I’m ever feeling low, or need an extra boost – I actually walk ON that glitter from that night. It’s my little secret, walking down the streets of New York City. No one else can see it, but with every single step, I think:
I’m walking on that glitter to pave the path to even bigger dreams.
You can also try this little magic boost by taping pennies to the inside of your shoes to “step with abundance”. If you want world travel, you can tape a foreign coin to the inside. I’ve lined the inside of my shoes with maps to bring me adventures, with favorite poems to bring me writing inspiration, with a certain concert ticket stub to bring me courage and a sassy rock and roll vibe.
“People say I’m crazy
I got diamonds on the soles of my shoes
Well that’s one way to lose
These walking blues
Diamonds on the soles of my shoes….” – Paul Simon
That glitter from 2006 still remains taped to my golden shoe that I wore my first big night of performing. So when you see me performing my Isis number, you know the secret lucky charm that is hidden beneath my feet. I dance on it every time in celebration….
