How To Get Wildly Inspired.

With the Empire State Building as our witness,
and the tides singing their East River song against the pier where we sat,
Gala Darling and I sat in the sunshine
brainstorming for our wild magic futures.

Why am I telling you this?

Because the number one reason that people stumble onto Danger Diary, is because they google….
How to keep going for your dreams when all you want to do is give up.

If you are here – either because you googled that phrase, or you are a long time reader back for more…
I’ve got your back.

As someone who nearly gave up my dreams, I know what that’s about.

There is an antidote.

I lust that word.
Webster’s Dictionary defines it as “a medicine or other remedy for counteracting the effects of poison, disease, etc.”.

Not believing in ourselves is a poison.
Other people not believing in us can also be a form of poison.

When I first moved to New York City, I knew 3 people.
I started waitressing a billion hours a week to pay for my rent.
I started befriending my co-workers, because I spent more time around them than anyone else.
I remember one night, the city was hit with 2 feet of snow, work was dead, and we all sat around the bar talking about life.
It was on that night, I revealed my dreams, and what brought me to NYC.
The bartender was about 5 years older than me and while everyone nodded along with her, she said something like this….
“You need a backup plan. I think it’s cute that you’ve got this wild imagination but that stuff doesn’t usually pan out. I don’t mean to burst your bubble or anything…..”
And then she went on and on about how “real life” works.
I started to feel faint.

To this day, I can’t hear the words “I don’t mean to burst your bubble…” without wanting to throw up in my mouth.

I went home absolutely wrecked with a million questions in my mind….
What if she was right?
Is this what “real life” was about?
Was I destined to fail and had bought into some sugary imagination be-who-you-want-to-be bullshit?
What if all the daydreams I had about my future that seemed so real were just that….daydreams?
What if I took myself a billion miles away from my family, my friends and my home to chase an impossible dream?

I never felt more defeated than on my walk home that night in 2 feet of snow.
I was poisoned….
with doubt.

Dreams can be fragile…
easy to kill with words of poison.

And I found the antidote.
My True Co-Conspirators.

As soon as I started hanging around people who were doing their dreams, rather than people naysaying dreams, my world started to take shape.

Two things happened:

1. I would tell them my “crazy” ideas and they would not only cheer me on, but encourage me to dream even further.
They saw the best me, and I saw the best them.

2. When any one of us had a success, we would celebrate because it meant that it was POSSIBLE. It was good news for ALL of us. It encouraged us to keep moving, keep creating, keep imagining and making strides.

I tell you these things because in the last 48 hours – this is what happened in my world:

My dear friend, Gala Darling took the reigns, self-published and released her book “Radical Self Love”.  Her book FLEW to the top (NUMBER 1) on Amazon’s Movers and Shakers list. As the numbers were coming in, we were side by side, squealing with excitement.  It was so inspiring to watch my friend’s book slay the charts and know that her positive message will be in the hands of people all around the world.  Here’s the link to check out her book – it’s a MUST HAVE!

Then Burke just started his brand new directing job for a major CNN show.
He heard that there was a spot open for a director – and he took a chance, called the producers, showed his work, showed his passion for what he does and nailed his interview. Friends of his also put in their good words for him which helped even more. Through his bravery to boldly go after what he wanted, a dream of his came true.

Here’s Burke directing Revolver with director of photography, Marshall Rose – who will be back at it in late Summer/early Fall with the second and final shooting of our dream film.

I came home from chilling with Gala and there was a text on my phone from Emilie Autumn, with two brand new songs she wrote for the Asylum Musical.  I sat in the dark, lying on my bed with the phone to my ear and the summer night breeze coming through the windows.  She told me about new twists and turns in the show, new ideas that made me excitably text back “YESYESYES” and songs that left me with goosebumps.  She knows how to create a world so very well – it blows my mind.

Jaye Bartell played one of the best music gigs I’ve ever seen in my life at a sold out show with Jessica Pratt.  He commanded the audience to pin-drop silence with his smoky voice, in a manner best described as hypnotic.  The next day, my inbox binged with the finished first song of his upcoming album and closing my eyes to listen to it for the billionth time that day, I imagined all the incredible things coming up for him, because it’s impossible NOT to see…. I know, I had watched while he put a spell on everyone in the room he was playing to.

These are a few of my favorite co-conspirators.

People that move me.
People that inspire me.
People who have my back and I have theirs.
People who are making their worlds happen.
People who say fuck the naysayers, and let’s DO THIS.

They are the antidote to the poison.

Who are people that inspire you?
Who are people that let you know it can be done
and also believe in you?

Tag them in this post on twitter and let’s lift each other up.
Gush about someone and their dream.
Let us know all about it.
Feed it.
And watch the world open for us all.

How To Not Die While Going After Your Biggest Dream: 5 Easy Tips!

1. You Aren’t Done Until You’re Dead.
For the last 2 months, I’ve been in my own personal Lord of The Rings journey.
Hear me out:

  • If Frodo and Sam left the Shire and walked to Mordor getting tans and drinking margaritas, nobody would give a fuck about their story. And while I’m sure they would have had a great time, their victory wouldn’t be as big either.
  • But instead, Frodo and Sam have to deal with dragons flying at them, giant spiders attacking them, monsters running at them with battle axes and a naked bald hunched over slimy guy trying to steal their shit.

They keep pushing through ALL of this.
Even though they think they might die at any moment.
Even when it seems too big and too crazy to continue.
But all those obstacles and all those true tests make the victory even sweeter.

When you think you can’t go anymore,
when you think you are going to lay down in the middle of the road and wait for it to be over,
drag yourself up and keep going.
You can handle it.
As long as there is still breath in your body and the bastards haven’t killed you yet,
you are winning.

2.  Find Your Allies.
One thing I discovered out on the road is that the majority of people out there in the world have had some kind of wild dream.
When you come across these people and you’re in the middle of trying to figure out your wild dream…it sparks something in them, and they will be kickass allies in helping your journey.
We found Allies in every town we found ourselves in.
We did that really scary thing every single day:
We asked.
We talked to complete strangers and told them what we needed and what we were looking for.
We got rides, awesome locations, free coffee and donuts, hugs, homemade dinners, and a borrowed sedan from a Mayor’s office (you can’t make this up).
There’s too many things to even list all the sweet things that people did.
And we were grateful for every single one.
Without our Allies – people that were previously strangers the day before, who became our friends and rescuers…we would have been screwed.
Shout out to Team Revolver and Team Revolver Graphic Design (Michelle and Shawna).
To all of you who are reading this, and you know who you are, we are allies for life, and any wild dream you need… I’ve got a car, a spare bed and a warm meal for you any day of the week.

3. Fuel Up By Being Inspired By Others Doing Their Dream.
Remember this: You are not on this path alone.
There are other crazy motherfuckers out there that are also going for their biggest dreams.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:
Every person you look up to – every hero you have had…
has travelled this road you are on right now.

There would be moments waking up in dingy motels or moments I’d feel lost and I couldn’t push forward anymore where I would grab my phone, throw in my earbuds, and listen to friends like Kim Boekbinder, Jaye Bartell, Emilie Autumn and Kai Altair, to just escape for a moment and know that all of them are out there right now on the path to their dreams. I would read inspiring blogs and thought provoking articles by my friends like Gala Darling and Molly Crabapple to name a few.
You are not alone. Keep repeating it.
Hurl your body into the wild unknown of your dream knowing that others are right there with you.

4.  Still Look For The Stars Even When You Are Lying In The Gutter.
Rock that attitude of gratitude.
One of my favorite quotes of all time is from Oscar Wilde:
“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”
Even in the scariest and worst moments
look up to one thing that you can hold on to…
just one positive thing.
And I promise more will come.
You can always just roll around with me in the gutter with me for a little while – I’m always there.

5. When You Have Been Beaten Down and Turned Over Sideways By Your Dream, Refer to Rule #1.

Never give up, motherfuckers.
We’ve got this.
Sending you all my love with 2 broken toes and battle scars from my dreams.
If you think someone in your world could use this today, please share.

2 Reasons You MUST Hurl Yourself Into Adventure featuring a Song With Me And Maggie Maggots!

Jack White’s voice sang out in my room as my alarm went off this morning.
I looked on my phone and saw this, the second my eyes opened:
Screen Shot 2014-07-17 at 11.02.05 AM
And we knew what we needed to do.

Maggie traveled by plane and then by bus to the mountain.
We’ve had a lot of adventures together since we met in 2008, traveling the world with our friend, Emilie Autumn.

Last night, among fireflies and under the moon…
Maggie had her haunting glockenspiel
I had my guitar
and our voices cut into the dark night
rising and falling
like spirits weaving through air.

An iPhone heard it all, remembered it, captured it….
on this moon mountain mystery night.

If you were there with us –
this is what you would have heard:

We call ourselves Mirror Sisters.

And because of that tweet this morning – we thought:

We have to put it out there. Fuck it.

Just share it.

I have a question….
if you have a dream….
if you are fucking around creatively and having fun…..
what are the reasons you don’t put it out there?

I know my top two:

Number 1: Being judged negatively by others.
Number 2: Fear that it’s not good enough.

Right now, Maggie and I are sitting on the porch writing lyrics. We’re gonna play together on this perfect day and let ourselves just do it.

I told her what I was sharing with you and she said:
“When you’re a kid you don’t think about it. You just put it out there. When you’re an adult you have an expectation of what you have to do and who you have to be. It stunts the creative process.”

Then she said:

“There is no destination in creativity. It’s not that I get to this place and then I’m done.”

So we continue an adventure…

Secrets, Fortune Telling and the Emilie Autumn Experience

“With every stitch is a wish….”
my Grandma used to say.

Behold! Above is a little secret hint of what’s to come on the Emilie Autumn Experience on the Warped Tour.

This beautiful dress that Em made will be worn by the tea leaf reader in the fortune tent.

We have so many secrets to whisper to you….

Your world is about to change.

The house is full of costumes, actors, props, paints, and mysterious things….
we are hitting the road tomorrow and there is a whirlwind of activity.

I wanted to give you a little peek….
Yesterday, under the sun and then under a gorgeous moon, I hand sewed the collar to the dress
and I threw three cards down for you.

The cards reveal that a message will come to you soon that will bring you good news most likely involving a celebration with friends.

Whenever I see that “Sun” card – I know it screams success, yes to life, and feeling like things are working.

Let’s say YES together.

Summer Music Festival Survival Guide: Top 5 MUST Things To Bring

veronica varlow concert

Can you spy me? Getting my groove on at the Jack White concert. Photo by Marc Gersh.

Wild. Hot. Insanity. It’s Summer Music Festival Time.

And if you’ve been to one – you KNOW – there’s ways to do it right
and ways to veer horribly wrong!

Emilie Autumn Veronica Varlow

Me and Miss Emilie Autumn moments before the show.

I’m here to show you how to

I’ve performed in festivals as far off as Australia and Germany,
I’ve held my own in a pit of 20,000 people at the Governor’s Ball Festival last weekend
and I’m headed off this Saturday to go rock the Vans Warped Tour with Emilie Autumn
I’ve got some weird insider secrets you won’t hear anywhere else.

You’ve heard the must-haves that you need to bring to any festival:
Water, more water, and more water.

But I’m going to tell you the things that have saved my ass when I’ve found myself in the pit
and people are passing out around me.

1. Lemon or Wild Orange Oil.

This tiny little 15ml bottle of lemon oil that I threw in my bag had some serious double duty beauty going on:

♥  It brought a semi-passed out girl back to consciousness.

She got pulled over the gates by security and leaned against the barricade that I was standing against.
She was too out of it to get in the wheelchair and was just trying to half stand/lean as she was seeing spots. I whipped my lemon oil out and put the bottle under her nose. She completely perked up and was able to focus again. The jolt of lemon oil to her brain did the trick.

Paging Nurse VARLOW.

♥  It made me smell fresh and awesome amongst a sea of sweaty bodies in 85+ degree weather.

A few drops of this on my skin made me feel like a human being again, plus it made everything smell nice around me. Because it’s organic and made from actually pressed lemon peels, it’s not going to make people allergic to it like those synthetic oils…and the girl next to me said “I just want to huff you all day.”

2. Sock Arm Bands.
Screen Shot 2014-06-12 at 10.05.59 AM

Yep. Here’s some DIY festival goodness that will save your ass.
Grab a pair of black socks.
Cut off the stretchy part that normally goes on your ankle.
Pull these onto your wrists.
Not only will it help your friends spot you from ten rows back when you’re throwing your hands up in the air…
but you can instantly slide up to your hand and use it to open Port-a-Potty doors without touching them.
You’re welcome.

3. Hand Held Fan.
Screen Shot 2014-06-12 at 10.30.35 AM

In the brutal heat with no breeze….
This little thing is going to become your best friend.
And YOU will become the best friend of anyone nearby who happens to be in the vicinity of your fanning.
Bonus points if you put fresh lemon oil on it and wave it through the body odor ridden audience.

4. Cool Vintage “Conversation Starter” Sheet.
pacman sheet

Trust me on this one….you are not going to want to stand all day.
Having a light sheet that you can fold and throw in your bag can be a day-saver.
Plus when it gets cold at night and you’re rocking some crocheted bikini top,
you can throw this around you and keep warm.

I brought a vintage Pac Man sheet with me I got off of eBay for 10 bucks- and not only was it an oasis for me,
I made new friends from people who thought it was cool.
Instant convo starter!

5. 2 Pairs of Cheap Sunglasses That It’s Okay To DESTROY.
lolita sunglasses

After the wildness of the shows were over and everyone had left –
the ground was COVERED in broken sunglasses.
Don’t even think of wearing expensive sunglasses to this noise.
Grab some Lolita style heart glasses for cheap on Etsy
and have a spare just in case.

What are some wild and crazy ideas of things you’ve brought to festivals?
Warped Tour HERE I COME.
See you there!
